Like every year, 2015 has been one of highs and lows. Whether you're sad to see it end or happy to start a new chapter, there's no better way to ring in the new year than heading to (or hosting!) an epic New Year's bash. I've got 5 steps of beauty prep to make sure you look and feel fabulous!
1. Whiten Those Teeth
When: 5-7 days out
Why: Because no amount of makeup can distract from a yellow smile.
How: Try Smile Brilliant, (c/o) which provides custom-fitted teeth whitening trays and whitening gel from the comforts of home. You get the same professional teeth whitening service you would at the dentist- but for a fraction of the cost. Start whitening today so you can build upon your results and achieve a killer smile by Thursday evening. If you wait until the last minute, you'll end up over-using the product, which will result in sensitive teeth and possibly swollen gums. Ouch!
2. Loose the Carbs & Sugar
When: 5-7 days out
Why: Avoid bloating by cleaning up your diet for the week. In fact, the sooner you do this- the better your results.
How: Stick to lean proteins and lots of leafy, green vegetables. If you have a sweet-tooth, indulge in a small cup of non-fat greek yogurt sweetened with Truvia and vanilla extract. Satisfy any cravings for crunchy chips by snacking on cashews or almonds. Think: South Beach Diet, Phase 1. It's only a week- you can do it!
3. Prep your Hair & Skin
When: 2-3 days out
Why: Because healthy is pretty.
How: Exfoliate your body and face, use brightening masks, and slather yourself in high-quality lotion. For your face, try these fabulous facial masks from 7th Heaven (c/o.) At $1.99 each, they are pampering yet totally affordable. I like the Chocolate Mud Mask, which smells good enough to eat! For the body, let your skin soften in warm water during your shower or bath, then exfoliate using Earth Therapeutics Exfoliating Hydro Gloves- $6.75 from Amazon.com. Follow with Kiehl's Creme de Corps, available here.
Another tip? Avoid blow-drying and heat-styling your hair for a few days. On the day of New Years Eve, styling healthy locks and applying make-up to smooth skin will be that much easier and will yield incredible results.
4. Mani/Pedi Hour
When: 1-2 days out
Why: Heading into the new year with chipped nails? I don't think so.
How: Save a little money and DIY! If you're prone to breakage, consider an At-Home Gel Manicure kit. Feeling sassy? Give one of our Holiday Nails a try! Some of our favorite festive colors right now are Good as Gold and Marshmallow, both by Essie.
5. Get Glowing
When: The night before
Why: Winter white is only cute when it comes to clothes and nails. Winter white skin? Not so much.
How: Search Groupon for spray-tanning salons in your area- you can always find great deals! Then, make an appointment ASAP, as they book up fast this week. Don't have time for that? Try an at-home tanning lotion like L'Oreal Paris Sublime Self-Tanning Lotion, about $10 at drugstores (save!), St. Tropez Self Tan Bronzing Mousse, $32.00 at Sephora (splurge!), or Clarins Self Tanning Instant Gel, $37 at Sephora (Splurge.)
Happy New Year!
