The awkward phase… who doesn’t have one? (And if you didn’t, you are either a freak of nature, or the luckiest person ever). It’s a time of experimenting with your look, while still figuring out your style and overall self. I was a late bloomer: it took me until my late teens to learn how to style my curly hair, and how to apply basic makeup such as eyeliner. Not until my junior year of college is when I learned how to dress for my body type, and what fashion trends I truly admire and feel comfortable in.
In the words for US Magazine, stars are just like us. When celebrities emerge in the spotlight, it usually takes them some time to find their look. Here are my top 10 celebrity transformations:
1. The Kardashians
Keeping Up With The Kardashians premiered on E! in 2007, and while the sisters were always fashionable, they have each taken their unique sense of style to the next level. Seven years after the show has premiered, the sisters have expanded their fashion brand throughout the World, and are seen as international fashion icons.
2. Miley Cyrus
In 2006, Miley Cyrus was cast as Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel at age 11. As she matured and began to advance her singing career, she experimented with her style and integrated country and rock & roll into her music and her fashion. However, in October of 2013 Cyrus released her Bangerz album, with a completely new look from head to toe. Today, Miley Cyrus is constantly pushing her style to the limit with her risque yet fashion forward look.
Rihanna really emerged in the music scene in 2005 with her hit single, “Pon De Replay”. As a late teenager, she was usually rocking jeans and a crop top. However, Rihanna has defiantly mirrored her music: as her songs become sexier and more bad ass, so does her sense of style.
4. Emma Watson
Emma Watson was cast as Hermione in the Harry Potter series at the age of 9. On camera, she had frizzy curly hair, the Hogwarts uniform on, and an adorable British accent. As she got older, her hair became smoother (and eventually much shorter), and her sense of style became very matured. Today, Emma Watson has a very classic, clean, and sophisticated sense of style.
5. Ashley Benson
In 2009, Ashley Benson was cast as Hannah in Pretty Little Liars on ABC, and had a very young and simple look when she first emerged in the spotlight. In 2012 however, we saw a different side to Ashley Benson (along with Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens) in the film Spring Breakers. It was clear that she was no longer a child, and her sense of style has emerged with a sense of punk and sophistication.
6. Selena Gomez
In 2007, Selena Gomez starred in Wizards of Waverly Place on the Disney Channel and began releasing albums soon after. Selena Gomez’s style began to become more mature with the release of her 2011 album, “When the Sun Goes Down”. Like Ashley Benson, Gomez’s style really changed after the film Spring Breakers. Today, Selena Gomez has a sensual, but yet classic/simple look.
7. Vanessa Hudgens
In 2005, Vanessa Hudgens was cast as the lead role of Gabriella in the Disney Channel original movie, High School Musical. Hudgens has a very young sense of style, and was often seen wearing jeans with a headband. Throughout her singing and film career she has transitioned to a more bohemian sense of style, and today Vanessa Hudgens’ sense of style fits in perfectly with the Coachella look.
8. Kendell & Kylie Jenner
When the Kardashians’ reality show first premiered in 2007, Kendall and Kylie were young girls, and added a sense of innocence and family to the show. However, as they have gotten older the Jenner sisters have completely transformed into little fashionistas. Like their older sisters, Kendall and Kylie have such a unique and individual look yet they always compliment and balance one another.
9. Katy Perry
Katy Perry emerged in the music scene in 2008 with her hit single “I Kissed a Girl”. Her style was rock & roll but still very young and innocent at the same time. In 2010, Perry released her third studio album, “Teenage Dream”, and with it her style completely changed. She was constantly rocking different color wigs and cupcakes on her brassiere. Today, her style has quieted down a little, but is still fun and adventurous.
10. Taylor Swift
Last but not least, Taylor Swift. Swift first emerged in the music scene in 2006 with her dubut album, and rocked the young country look with her iconic blonde curly hair. However, Swift began straightening her hair into a smooth and sleek look. Her style still has some sense of country, yet leans more towards the alternative/old Hollywood look.
