Skinny Paloma

posted in: Beverages, Recipes | 0

Oh, man. I love a margarita. You know what I don't love though? The calories in a margarita. So I started to brain-storm to come up with a skinny version that's more interesting and refreshing than my typical "I'll just have some tequila, club soda, and a lime, thanks."

I did a little research, and it turns out that contrary to popular belief: the margarita is not the most popular drink in Mexico. That honor would go to the lovely Paloma. It's a simple drink to make, but there are a few options that you should consider.

Firstly, let me get back to the calories. A Paloma is typically made with grapefruit juice, but here in America it's hard to find a brand that isn't riddled with added sugar and mystery preservatives. I decided to juice my own grapefruit and add a simple syrup made with stevia (Truvia.) Don't have the time or motivation to juice a grapefruit? Consider purchasing an all-natural grapefruit juice like this one from Q Drinks (c/o). You can actually pronounce and identify the ingredients on the label, and while it isn't necessarily low-calorie or sugar-free, it's definitely better than a lot of the alternatives. Click here to find a retailer near you.

Anyway, back to the recipe. Try this on for size...

For 1 Small Pitcher (Serves 4)

  • Using a juicer or some good old fashioned elbow grease, juice 1 cup of fresh grapefruit. (I used 2 grapefruits)
  • Combine 1 cup of clear tequila and 1 cup of fresh grapefruit juice in the pitcher. Squeeze in 1 whole lime.
  • In a small pot on the stove, start making your 0-calorie simple syrup. Melt 3 tablespoons of Truvia with 3 tablespoon of water. Heat and stir until it dissolves- 2-3 minutes. Pour into the pitcher and stir to combine. (If using a premade grapefruit juice like Q Drinks, skip this step.)
  • When you're ready to serve, fill up a pretty glass with ice and fill it 3/4 cup of the Paloma mix. Top it off with cold club soda (skip this step if you're using Q Drinks- it's already carbonated!) and enjoy!

For a Single Serving

If you're using freshly squeezed grapefruit juice:

  • Fill a pretty glass with some ice, and pour in equal parts freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, clear tequila, and club soda- about 2 oz (1/4 cup) of each.
  • Follow with 2 teaspoons of 0-calorie simple syrup.
  • Squeeze in 1/4 fresh lime, and stir to combine.
  • Put on your shades and enjoy.

If you're using Q Drinks Grapefruit Juice:

  • Fill a pretty glass with some ice, and pour in equal parts freshly Q Drinks Grapefruit juice and clear tequila- about 4 oz (1/2 cup) of each.
  • Squeeze in 1/4 fresh lime, and stir to combine.
  • Put on your shades and enjoy.
