Tory Johnson is the author of the #1 NYT bestseller The Shift (c/o): a first-hand account of how she was able to lose over 70lbs after a lifetime of failed attempts at losing weight. It’s not a diet, which Tory calls “a temporary pause on bad behavior.” It’s a lifestyle change and more importantly- a mental change and a dramatic shift on how she views food.
I love this notion of “shifting,” or what I’ve referred to as “the swap.” Like most women, I often feel a struggle to balance my love of rich cuisine with the desire to maintain a healthy and lean physique. And since my day job consists of recipe development, tastings, and lots and lots of Italian cuisine, it’s safe to say #theStruggleIsReal.
Like Tory, I’ve learned over the years that the most successful method is to think about what you really want and make it a healthy choice. For example- I’m a chocoholic, and
want need a daily dose of the good stuff. An initial craving is typically for something decadent like silky ice cream, warm chocolate chip cookies, or a fudgy brownie. “Shifting” that desire to a healthy version- 1 sugar-free dark chocolate square for example- allows me a guilt-free indulgence.
